After deleting a lesbian couple from the Russian edition of their recent catalog, Russian gays and lesbians, some of them asylum seekers, pose in guerilla photo shoot at a Brooklyn IKEA New York, NY -- This weekend as shoppers mobbed the popular Swedish furniture chain, a group of Russian gay men and women organized a provocative guerilla photo shoot at the Brooklyn IKEA. The art protest was a response to IKEA's recent decision to spike a story about a lesbian couple’s home furnishing needs from their most recent Russian catalog, buckling to legal fears stemming from Russia’s new ill defined law against “propaganda of non-traditional lifestyles. The photo shoot was organized by Joseph Huff-Hannon, co-editor of the forthcoming book Gay Propaganda: Russian Love Stories, Alexander Kargaltsev, a Russian artist/photographer, and gay man who was recently granted asylum in the US, and Nina Long, co-founder of Rusa LGBT, a network of Russian and Russian speaking activists. |
